The questionSeparate the2025 announcement from the system, meeting format and configuration a buyer can evaluate now.

Platform, product, configuration
Three distinct evidence checkpoints for a Beam procurement decision.

Platform announcement: AI volumetric video plus light-field output.

Enterprise hardware unveiling: one-to-one3D and group2D distinguished.

First identify which name is on the quote
Google’s20May2025 announcement turned Project Starline into Google Beam, a platform combining an AI volumetric-video model with a light-field display. HP’s11June unveiling at InfoComm gave buyers a hardware identity: HP Dimension with Google Beam. Treat those as two linked milestones. A research project, a communications platform and a purchasable room system are not interchangeable things. Google ↗ · HP ↗
That separation changes a procurement brief. Ask whether the proposed scope covers one endpoint or both locations, installation, the supported meeting platform and ongoing service. A compelling image of a remote colleague says little about which organization owns the network, capture setup or recovery procedure. Those are editorial evaluation questions, not missing features we have established through testing.
Three-dimensional does not mean every meeting is3D
HP’s launch release distinguishes immersive one-to-one3D communication from conventional2D group meetings and interoperability with other cloud meeting services. It also warns that a cloud-service license may be required separately. The current product page repeats the one-to-one limitation. A room with several seats is therefore not evidence that every person simultaneously gets the same spatial view. HP ↗ · HP ↗
For a pilot, specify two separate tasks: a conversation between two people and the usual team meeting with a laptop participant. Request both demonstrations. Note who can see the relevant expression or gesture, whether shared documents remain legible and how the conversation changes when someone joins late. Do not collapse preferences, task completion and visual impression into one score called presence.
Keep launch specifications separate from current ones
The2025 release describes six capture cameras; HP’s current product page describes seven. We have not reconciled those counts into a definitive hardware specification. The responsible conclusion is a documented discrepancy, not an assertion that the device was upgraded or that one source is wrong. Request the dated configuration sheet for the actual quoted system. A useful comparison sheet records document title, revision date, model identifier and the supplier’s answer next to each requirement. Keep launch-era promises in a separate column from currently quoted functions. This prevents an attractive number from one generation being combined with an availability statement from another. It also makes a later change in the quote visible before installation.
Evaluate the conversation under ordinary conditions
Google’s announcement described an enterprise rollout with HP and other partners; it was not an immediate general-retail availability guarantee. HP now provides an enquiry route for demonstrations and availability. Neither establishes stock in your country, an installed price or a confirmed delivery date. Use those routes to obtain a project-specific response, not to infer a universal launch schedule. Google ↗ · HP ↗
Our suggested acceptance exercise is deliberately mundane: describe an unfamiliar object, make a shared decision, then repeat the task on the familiar meeting system. Include ordinary room lighting, return audio and an interruption. Record observations from both ends and agree what a successful result would justify spending. The2025 milestone matters because it brought a research direction into an enterprise product conversation. It does not remove the need to test the actual conversation you intend to support.
What this does not establish
- Manufacturer descriptions, not independent testing.
- Camera-count discrepancy unresolved; price and regional availability not asserted.
Uncited evaluation suggestions are editorial analysis. No hands-on testing, interview or site visit is claimed.
