A standard exists, even if its numbers sit behind a paywall
Contrast ratio, the difference between the brightest and darkest parts of a projected image, is not a matter of opinion, and AVIXA, the audiovisual industry association formerly known as InfoComm, maintains a formal standard defining how to measure it. AVIXA's own published standards catalogue, as retrieved on 16 September 2026, lists a standard titled 'Image System Contrast Ratio', currently designated V201.01:2021, described in one line as a document that 'defines image system contrast ratio and its measurement'. This traces back to an earlier ANSI/AVIXA standard addressing the same measurement, though the historical 2011 designation and its exact original wording could not be confirmed from the pages available at the time of writing; that gap is flagged here rather than papered over with an invented figure.
What creates a weak image, in plain terms
A projected or reflected image is not emitted at full strength from a self-lit surface the way an LED panel is; it is thrown light landing on a screen, competing directly with whatever ambient light also lands on that screen. Contrast ratio measures the gap between the brightest white the projector can produce on the screen and the darkest black, which in a projected system is never truly black, since ambient light and the screen's own reflectance put a floor under it. A documented instance of exactly this problem appears in an unrelated illusion patent: a 2011 Pepper's-ghost-style projection patent specifies the rig needs 'a bright projector (8,000 lumens+)' specifically to overcome ambient light and avoid the reflected image acquiring a washed-out, 'milky hue'. That is one production team's concrete answer to the same problem a contrast standard exists to quantify generally.

It does not, on the pages available without buying the standard itself, hand over the specific minimum ratios recommended for different viewing tasks, such as passive video viewing against detailed, analytical decision-making content. Any number quoted for 'the standard's minimum contrast ratio' without a citation to the standard's own text should be treated as someone's paraphrase, not the standard itself; this record does not repeat such a figure because it could not verify one directly.
Questions to bring to a demo
- Was the projected image's contrast actually measured against a recognised standard, or only judged by eye under production lighting?
- What is the venue's expected ambient light level, and has the projector's output been matched to it?
- Does the viewing task demand a higher contrast ratio than a generic demo used?
A contrast standard exists precisely because ambient light quietly erodes a projected image before anyone notices; the number that defines an acceptable loss sits inside a document worth requesting from whoever claims compliance with it.
