A large population study of stereo vision, not a single case

The accepted manuscript held at Cambridge, published as 'A population study of binocular function' in Vision Research and recorded in the publisher's own citation entry, measured stereo acuity, the duration of alternating percepts in binocular rivalry, and the extent of dichoptic masking in 1,060 adult participants, as part of a genome-wide association study of perceptual traits. The paper's own abstract states it reports 'the distributions of the measures, the correlations between measures, and their relationships to other psychophysical traits', including sex, age, interpupillary distance, eye dominance, phorias, visual acuity and personality. This is population-scale measurement, not a single demonstration or anecdote, and it treats stereo vision as a continuously varying trait rather than a pass or fail one.

Depth from two eyes, and what breaks it

Stereo depth depends on the visual system combining two horizontally offset images, one from each eye, into a single percept of relative distance. That combination fails, or degrades, for reasons that have nothing to do with the display: uncorrected differences in the two eyes' focus, a suppressed or dominant eye, misalignment of the eyes, or simply low natural stereo acuity. A display can present a geometrically perfect stereo pair and still be seen as flat, or uncomfortable, by a specific viewer for reasons that sit in their visual system rather than in the hardware. The abstract explicitly measured several of these factors together, which is why it can speak to correlations rather than a single 'stereo-blind' category.

What the abstract does and does not claim

The abstract reports a genetic association, a variant in the gene VTI1A, linked to 'self-reported ability to see autostereograms', the single-image random-dot patterns that only resolve into depth for some viewers. That a genetic correlate was findable at all confirms some participants reported being unable to see autostereograms while others could, within the same sample. What the abstract alone does not give this review is a headline percentage of the sample who were stereo-blind by a clinical test; that sits in the full results section, behind the publisher's paywall. The honest position is that the study documents real, measurable population variation and at least one binary outcome that split the sample, without this review being able to quote an exact proportion.

Questions to bring to a demo

A spatial display built entirely around stereo parallax is building around a trait that a real population study finds varies continuously and, for some viewers, is effectively absent for certain stimuli. Motion parallax, occlusion and other depth cues that do not depend on binocular fusion are not a workaround for a broken stereo display; they are how a design keeps working for the share of any audience the population data shows will not get the stereo effect.
