A 2008 study measured fatigue from a stereo display conflict

What a 2008 study actually measured

Hoffman, Girshick, Akeley and Banks published 'Vergence-accommodation conflicts hinder visual performance and cause visual fatigue' in Journal of Vision on 28 March 2008, a citation confirmed independently in Crossref's bibliographic record for the paper. The authors built a display capable of presenting correct focus cues at several depth planes and compared it against a conventional stereo display where focus and convergence are decoupled. Across several experiments the paper measured identification time for stereoscopic targets, stereoacuity, depth-discrimination accuracy, and, in a fourth experiment, fatigue after 45-minute viewing sessions.

Two eye behaviours a flat screen cannot both satisfy

Vergence is how far the eyes rotate inward to point at something; accommodation is how the eye's lens changes shape to bring that same thing into focus. Looking at a real object, both cues point to the same distance. A conventional stereo display shows each eye a flat image on a screen at one fixed distance, so accommodation stays locked to the screen while vergence is asked to converge on whatever depth the two images imply; when that implied depth differs from the screen's actual distance, the two cues disagree. The study's own display avoided this by presenting focus cues that moved with vergence distance, rather than staying fixed at the screen.

What the finding does and does not extend to

The paper reports that eliminating the conflict reduced identification time, improved depth-discrimination accuracy, and, in the 45-minute sessions, produced markedly less reported eye strain, blur and headache than the conflicting condition. It does not establish a universal maximum comfortable viewing duration for every stereo display; the 45-minute figure describes this study's own protocol and stimuli, not a general limit that transfers unchanged to a cinema screen, a headset or a tabletop display with a different depth range and brightness. Extrapolating a specific safe viewing time from this study to an unrelated product overstates the evidence.

The mismatch this paper documents is a property of display geometry, not of any individual viewer's tolerance, which is why it recurs across unrelated stereo products that fix focus at one distance while asking the eyes to converge elsewhere.
