The Simulator Sickness Questionnaire replaced ad hoc reports

A paper built on a decade of simulator-sickness research
The publisher's own citation record documents a July 1993 paper by Robert Kennedy, Norman Lane, Kevin Berbaum and Michael Lilienthal in The International Journal of Aviation Psychology, titled to describe 'an enhanced method for quantifying simulator sickness'. The paper's own reference list, visible in that same publisher record, cites more than fifteen earlier Navy, NASA and NATO reports on simulator sickness in fixed- and rotary-wing flight simulators, stretching back to studies from the 1940s. That lineage matters: the instrument did not appear from nowhere, it consolidated years of prior symptom-tracking work into one repeatable form. Kennedy continued that programme afterwards; a 2011 NASA-published study he co-authored with colleagues at Johnson Space Center and Wyle Laboratories tracked motion-sickness symptoms across dome and head-mounted-display environments over repeated sessions, reporting rapid recovery after each exposure and reduced severity across successive days.
What a symptom checklist is measuring
A simulator or headset does not make everyone sick the same way. Some viewers report stomach awareness, others eye strain, others a sense of disorientation once they remove the device. A structured questionnaire separates these symptom families and asks about each one at a defined moment, typically before and after exposure, so a change can be attributed to the session rather than to how the respondent happened to be feeling that day. That depends on viewing conditions a demo rarely controls: how long the person wore the device, whether they were seated or walking, whether frame rate held steady, and whether they had prior exposure to similar systems. None of that context survives a single thumbs-up or thumbs-down.
What the record does and does not establish
The publisher record establishes authorship, journal, date and the instrument's stated purpose. It does not, on its own, give this review the item wording or scoring weights, which sit behind a paywall this review could not open. That is a real limit: a venue adopting 'the SSQ' at second hand should verify the actual instrument text and scoring against a source it can read in full, rather than against a description of a description. What the citation record and the 2011 follow-up study do establish is durability and continued institutional use across nearly three decades, itself evidence that ad hoc verbal feedback was judged insufficient by the people who ran these programmes for a living.
Questions to bring to a demo
- Was any structured post-session symptom measure used, or only informal comments?
- How long was the exposure, and were symptoms checked before as well as after?
- Were the same conditions (seating, motion, frame rate) held constant across the people being compared?
A demo that ends in applause has not measured comfort; it has measured enthusiasm at one moment in one room. The instrument this record documents exists because those are not the same thing, and because a venue running many sessions a day needs a repeatable way to tell whether discomfort is rising before visitors start saying so themselves.
