John Henry Pepper's own account explains the ghost's glass trick

Pepper's 1890 memoir and the patent text it quotes describe the hidden stage and angled glass behind the Victorian ghost illusion.

A private preview just before Christmas 1862

John Henry Pepper's own memoir, The True History of the Ghost, published in 1890, describes a private show for literary and scientific friends and the press just before Christmas Day in 1862, ahead of the illusion's run inside a staging of Bulwer-Lytton's 'A Strange Story' at the Royal Polytechnic. Pepper credits the underlying optical idea to Henry Dircks, who had described it in a paper for the Athenaeum literary journal; Pepper's own contribution, by his account, was the practical double-stage arrangement that made the effect usable in a working theatre. A Science Museum Group biography of Pepper instead credits Dircks with the first demonstration outright, a reminder that institutional sources disagree on how to divide credit between the idea and its staging.

An actor lit up, reflected into darkness

The trick is a large sheet of glass set at an angle on the visible stage, in front of the audience, with a second stage built lower and out of sight. Pepper's book quotes the patent specification directly: that hidden stage is to be strongly illuminated by artificial light, and is capable of being rendered dark instantaneously. When the hidden performer is lit and the visible stage is dark, the glass reflects a bright, semi-transparent image of the performer into the scene the audience can see; cutting the hidden light makes the ghost vanish. None of this is projection or wavefront reconstruction: it is a plain mirror reflection, and it depends entirely on keeping the audience's side dim, the hidden side bright, and the glass free of stray reflections from elsewhere in the room.

What the geometry still demands, and what the sources don't settle

Because the image is a reflection, it exists only from viewing angles where the glass sits between the eye and the hidden stage; step outside that cone and the ghost disappears while the rest of the set stays visible. Ambient light is the enemy of the whole effect, which is why the method still needs a controlled, darkened room rather than daylight or a lit gallery. An 1865 engraving, published three years later, shows the same angled-glass layout Pepper describes, cited here only as an image record, not as evidence of the 1862 premiere. The sources opened for this draft do not describe audience reaction or takings, and Pepper recounts his own history nearly three decades later, so the private preview is dated here only to the month.

A sheet of angled glass and a hidden lit stage are still doing the work in every modern descendant of this trick, whatever branding a producer puts on it. Calling any of them a hologram skips past a mechanism Pepper himself was careful to set out in patent language.
