HoloLens stopped being made at the end of 2024

What the record documents
Microsoft's own HoloLens release notes, a living document retrieved for this piece as it stood on 16 September 2026, state plainly: "As of December 2024, HoloLens devices are no longer manufactured." The same page sets out what continues afterward rather than simply stopping support outright — it names December 2024 as carrying "the final monthly servicing update for HoloLens 2 on Windows 10" for older builds, and separately states a "minimum security update period" running to "February 28, 2028" for units bought before the end of February 2025. This is Microsoft's own record of its own product, not an independent audit of what installations are actually still running.
What is ending, described in its own terms
HoloLens 2 was itself announced on 24 February 2019, at Mobile World Congress Barcelona, where Microsoft's own announcement described "see-through holographic lenses" delivered through a waveguide display and said the field of view had "more than doubled" over the original 2015 device. That is the platform whose manufacture the 2024 release notes describe as finished: a waveguide headset, sold into enterprise deployments — training guides, remote assistance, industrial inspection — rather than to consumers, and still listed on Microsoft's current HoloLens landing page as the company's supported holographic computer.
What the record does and does not establish
The documents opened for this piece establish an end to manufacturing and a bounded security-update horizon; they do not describe a successor device, do not give a reason for the decision, and do not say how many units or organisations are affected. For anyone with an existing HoloLens 2 deployment — a museum installation, a factory floor guide, a surgical training programme — the practical fact is the security-update clock: an installation can keep running past 2028, but Microsoft's own document says it will no longer meet the standard it names after that date, which is a planning constraint distinct from the device simply failing.
Questions to bring to a demo
- Is a given installation running on hardware whose spare-parts supply depends on remaining unsold stock rather than ongoing manufacture?
- What migration path does Microsoft document, if any, for content or workflows built specifically for HoloLens 2's holographic APIs?
- Does the 2028 security-update boundary matter for how the device is used, or only for whether it stays connected to networked services?
The most-cited 'holographic' headset in this whole batch is, by its own maker's documentation, no longer being built — a reminder that a platform's optical mechanism can outlast the company's willingness to keep manufacturing it.
