What the press material describes
On 20 September 2018, Vodafone UK issued a press release describing what it called the UK's first holographic call over 5G, staged between Manchester and Newbury. The release states that footballer Steph Houghton appeared as a captured figure viewed through a HoloLens headset by an eleven-year-old fan in Surrey, for a short coaching session, and frames the event explicitly as part of the company's 5G trials, not a commercial service. That framing matters: the release itself calls this an early indication of a future capability, not a product being launched.
What creates the image, and who could see it
Naming the headset is the important technical detail the release supplies. HoloLens is a see-through mixed-reality display worn by one viewer at a time; whatever figure of Houghton it showed was visible only to that headset's wearer, positioned and scaled in that wearer's own room, not projected into open space where a crowd could see it unaided. That is a fundamentally different viewing condition from a beamed cabinet display, of the kind sold for stage and retail use, which any number of people can watch from the room at once without special eyewear. A reader encountering the phrase hologram call without this detail could reasonably assume the second condition; the release's own wording supports only the first.
What the demonstration does and does not show about bandwidth
The release's stated case for 5G is about latency, not hologram fidelity: it says faster round-trip data will help eliminate the motion sickness many people experience when using virtual reality headsets over a mobile network, a claim about responsiveness rather than image quality. Vodafone's own current 5G explainer page, retrieved 16 September 2026 as a living document, states latency figures of roughly one to ten milliseconds against thirty-six to fifty-eight for 4G, the kind of network property this demonstration was built to showcase. Neither document states how much bandwidth the specific capture consumed, over how large an area the 5G test network ran, or whether the same result would hold on a loaded commercial network rather than a controlled trial, so this entry does not supply those figures.

- Is the image viewed through personal headsets, or projected for a room to see unaided.
- Is the network condition a controlled trial cell or a loaded commercial deployment.
- Which specific claim is the network improving: latency, throughput, or the display itself.
Read on its own terms, Vodafone's demonstration is evidence of a low-latency mixed-reality session between two named locations. It is not, on this record, evidence about display technology beyond a headset, nor about network performance under ordinary commercial load, and the marketing phrase hologram call should be understood as describing the former while sounding like the latter.
