A regulatory filing, not a press release, gives the numbers

Sphere Entertainment Co.'s annual report for the year ended 30 June 2024 states plainly that "the Company's first Sphere opened in Las Vegas on September 29, 2023." That sentence, inside the 10-K, is a steadier anchor for the opening date than marketing copy, because it is filed under securities law rather than written to sell tickets. The same document describes the interior as "a 16K x 16K LED screen — a 160,000-square foot high-resolution interior display plane that surrounds the audience," and the exterior as "a 580,000 square foot, fully-programmable LED Exosphere… which consists of approximately 1.2 million LED pucks, spaced eight inches apart." These are the operator's own figures, not an outside measurement, but they are sworn statements rather than adjectives.

What actually makes the image

Nothing about Sphere is a hologram in the wavefront-reconstruction sense used elsewhere on this site. The interior is a direct-view LED wall: individually lit diodes arranged on a curved, dome-like surface that wraps around the seating bowl, so what a viewer sees is a conventional flat image stretched across an unconventional, enclosing geometry rather than a reconstructed wavefront. There is no parallax between a viewer's two eyes and no floating volume; the immersive effect comes from the screen's angular size filling peripheral vision, not from a depth cue a single photograph could not capture. The exterior Exosphere works the same way at building scale, using LED pucks rather than pixels to make a programmable outdoor facade visible from the Strip by day or night, independent of whatever plays inside. The venue's own site confirms current shows and location but, being a booking page, states no technical specification at all — a gap the filing fills.

What the filing does not establish

A regulatory document records what was built; it does not certify what a given seat experiences. The 10-K does not state per-seat contrast, brightness uniformity across a 16K surface, or how footage is mastered for a screen that curves rather than sits flat. Sphere Entertainment's own investor relations page describes the venue only as "an experiential medium powered by advanced technologies," language pitched at shareholders rather than colourists. Reading words like "experiential" and "medium" as engineering claims would be a mistake worth naming explicitly: this is the company's own editorial framing, not a specification this site can verify independently. The filing is strong evidence of scale — screen area, LED count, opening date — and weak evidence of how the image actually reads to someone seated at the edge of the bowl.

• Where in the bowl is picture quality measured, and does it hold up at the wraparound's edges?
• How is footage mastered separately for the curved interior dome and the flat-seeming exterior Exosphere?
• What do later annual reports say about attendance, technology upgrades, or write-downs on the LED systems?

Sphere is a genuine engineering record — a 16K interior wall and a million-plus-LED exterior skin, both tied to a dated filing — but it is a record of construction, not of the seated experience the marketing describes.
