When the image occupies a volume

What a swept-volume display gives you—and what a small cylinder cannot do.

A volume has physical limits

In a swept-volume display, the image is built through a physical region of space. The VX2 manufacturer now trades as Voxel Photonics; its About page describes the transition from Voxon. The current product page lists a 25 cm diameter, 25 cm high image region and 30 volumes per second. These are manufacturer specifications, not measurements made by Presence Atlas. The earlier VX1 photograph above is historical context; the additional VX2 image below shows the currently listed model.

Those dimensions should shape the brief before a scene is modeled. A compact volume can make a molecule, terrain model or animated object readable from several sides. It does not make a life-size remote presenter. Enlarging the content file cannot enlarge the hardware’s physical image envelope.

Design for luminous structure

Start with silhouettes, separation and motion. A luminous volume can communicate internal structure that a solid physical model hides, but that also means it may not behave like an opaque object. A buyer who expects every rear surface to disappear behind a front surface should bring that exact test to the demonstration.

Use a representative scene with overlapping forms, thin features and labels. Walk around the enclosure and observe what changes. Record readability at the intended audience distance, including the side from which people will first approach. These are proposed evaluation steps, not reported product tests.

The workflow is part of the purchase

Voxel’s current site links a simulator, its scene editor and tools for Blender, Unreal Engine and Unity. That gives a team a route to explore the content workflow before committing to hardware. A conventional video loop and a real-time 3D application are different deliverables; specify who owns the scene, interaction code and final deployment package.

For an exhibit, request a sample that runs unattended, restarts cleanly and loads the intended content. Ask for the enclosure dimensions, operating sound, service procedure and a spare-parts plan. The useful buying question is whether a small shared volume advances the task enough to justify its production and operational demands.
