Look at the controls, not just the result

Derivative’s original Kantan Mapper documentation shows an editing canvas, shapes, layers and texture controls. It describes drawing polygons or curved outlines in a projector’s field and filling those shapes with images. That is a concrete production activity: fitting media to a physical arrangement. The screenshot is from the documentation, and interface details may differ in the software version you use.

The effect is not automatically a hologram. A projected image remains tied to the surface that receives it. Carefully composed perspective can suggest depth, and a dark setting can make the supporting material less obvious, but the creative illusion should not be confused with an image volume floating free of a surface.

Choose the alignment problem

Derivative’s mapping overview distinguishes shape-based mapping from model-based alignment. Kantan Mapper addresses drawn regions; CamSchnappr uses a matching virtual model and physical structure. The right question is not which tool has the more impressive name, but which information you have available and what must line up.

For a set of flat scenic panels, a practical starting package includes a surface drawing, a test image and a record of the projector position. For a shaped object, add the geometry and a plan for identifiable alignment features. Confirm the actual method with the production specialist. This article is a planning guide, not a version-specific software tutorial.

Separate three deliverables

Keep the creative media, routing and alignment files distinct. The media says what should be seen. Routing determines which output receives it. Alignment establishes where it lands. A last-minute content change should not require a team to rediscover a calibrated surface, and a new projector position should not be mistaken for a broken movie.

Label the physical outputs and save a small diagnostic set: a grid, output numbers and high-contrast edges. Use it after transport or a scenic change, then return to the final media. Agree who has authority to adjust geometry during the show and how to restore the known-good state. These are editorial workflow recommendations, not features guaranteed by every mapping package.

Rehearse the conditions that reveal the surface

A beautiful dark-room frame is only one state of an installation. Test a fade to black, venue lights coming on, a visitor crossing the light path and the transition into the next scene. Decide which states are intended and which require a fallback. Include them in the creative review instead of discovering them when the audience is present.

Archive a wide photograph and a short operating note alongside the calibration file. Record the installed arrangement rather than only the desired result. If a touring crew can understand where the equipment belongs and how to confirm alignment, the effect has a chance of remaining consistent. The spectacular image and the unglamorous setup record belong to the same production.
